Why Is Sport On The News?
When I sat watching the news last night I was wondering who it was that decided to put sport alongside the headlines. It seems a bit strange to me that it is treated with the same amount of importance as the serious things that are going on around the world.
I suppose that if you a fan of football, tennis or rugby then it is great because you get to hear all about stuff you are interested in at the same time as seeing the news. However, when you are totally devoid of any interest in sports whatsoever, (like me) it is a case of having to sit through a load of stuff that bores you to tears…
I just cannot get my head round it. One minute you are listening to a serious report about a terrorist attack or the world’s dire financial situation and the next you are listening to the sob story of some footballer with a pulled ham-string. If it wasn’t for the regular mentions on the sports ‘news’ then I would have assumed that a ham-string was something used by a butcher…
Do we actually need to have regular updates on sport and its ‘heroes’? Perhaps it is a need that some of us have; to put sports stars on a pedestal and view them as some kind of higher beings. But they aren’t any different to the rest of us, are they? The only thing that really separates them from us is the ridiculous amount of money they get (‘get’, not ‘earn’).
Maybe one day they will start to have news programmes that only feature news stories. Perhaps someone else will realise how bizarre it is to mix news with a form of entertainment. But until that time people like me will just have to ponder on the point of it all…
Before I go, is this a bit drastic? The other day I went online and I typed in the phrase ‘Cosmetic doctors in London‘. I know what you are all surmising about me right now, especially you Isobel. The fact is I know there are so many other things that I could do with my spare income. But it is something that has been irritating forever, I think I am just going to get it done. Will you all judge me forever?
How many times have we heard those words from someone? I hate my job. How many times have we in fact said that ourselves either to a friends, a member of family or even a co-worker. Some of the braver of us find the courage to say it to our boss’s, and a few of those people sometimes even manage to hold onto their jobs afterwards!
