Neighbours
Neighbours. I don’t know the figures on the amount of people that watch it, but there are ALOT of them. More importantly, when I actually counted the amount of people I know that watch it I was shocked! Try it, ask around the people you know, ask them if they ever watched neighbours regularly and you will be shocked at the amount of people that say yes, that either still follow the programme or at one point in their lives did. Many of my friends don’t regularly follow it now, but they did at one point and more amazingly they will sit and watch random episodes at random times! Having not seen it for months, they will still sit and enjoy watching 25minutes of long term plotline and enjoy it.
So why does this happen with this programme? I think it’s because it’s about family. The show is based on a street around long term characters that you really get to know. They become like family to the viewers. People will sit in an office having a coffee gossiping about Carl Kennedy’s relationships with Susan. Even when you haven’t seen it in months, you can quickly pick up what’s going on because it is never very complicated, and the main characters are fairly consistent. Even when they change characters, the same stock characters remain. For example, I watched it today, and while the teenage girl ‘Hannah’ from back in 1996 would now be in her 20’s, there is a Hannah replica on the show that to me seems identical.
You know where you stand with Neighbours, you can pick it up and put it down easily, and it is really comforting television. While I will never watch Neighbours regularly, I think I’ll always be able to watch it with friends without having seen it for months, and I think it’s a show that will be around for years to come.
